Life in the park : Fixed point observation

I sketched this particular location in different times.

The first one was drawn in the most relaxed state when I look back.( It was in 2007 in Sagamihara Park in kanagawa.)

The second one was unfinished because when I was drawing this, the biggest earthquake hit Japan, so I stopped drawing it and went back home quickly.( 2011 March 11th)

If you are interested in my post in Urban Sketchers international blog at that time, click here.

The third one is in ten years, at the era of Covid 19. A newly playground equipment was erected.

I kept drawing same view again and again

For more than three months of staying home period, I kept drawing same view repeatedly in variety of method, and approaches. Thanks to USK Japan's weekly challenges, I have forced myself to sketch at least once a week. This activity actually helped me to realize various things. Without those experimenting occasion, I wouldn't have done thus wouldn't have learned.

( theme 2: sketch same location in different time or method)

( theme 3: sketch on any kind of objects but on ordinary rectangle shaped paper)

No. 13 Hara station "I sketch the 53 views in Tokaido, which Hiroshige drew”

"I sketch the 53 views in Tokaido, which Hiroshige drew”

This is the thirteenth station, Hara-jyuku. It took about 10 minutes by car from Numazu. Hiroshige Utagawa drew this swamp, cranes in the foreground and Mt.fuji in the background.

First, while I walked old Tolaido street, I looked for the same place where Hiroshige drew. However, I was not able to find it. After that, I moved to a swamp named Ukishima-gahara. There were just swamp and some birdwatchers. I started to sketch there. I could only see the skirts of the Mt. Fuji because of covering the top by the clouds. When I almost finished the sketch, The clouds were moving, and the whole shape of the mountain appeared

. It was not Mt. Fuji. It was Mt. Ashitaka which is about 1000m high. I could not believe it!

No. 11 Mishima station "I sketch the 53 views in Tokaido, which Hiroshige drew”

"I sketch the 53 views in Tokaido, which Hiroshige drew”

This is the eleven station, Mishima-jyuku. I started JR Mishima station to the Mishima shrine where Hiroshige drew. On the way, the Mishima Food festival was held in Shirataki-Koen park. I bought an Unagi-bento and a Mishima croquette. They were inexpensive and very delicious. After that, I arrived at the Mishima shrine and I saw a Trii gate. I sketched it immediately. Then, I strolled and I saw another big and great Trii gate. In fact, this gate was the really front gate. I was a little shocked.

Sketching with Jenn from Vancouver

I often ask people this but...

Suppose you were working at an office that has nothing to do with art or graphic design, and ask your colleague "What do you say we go out sketching next weekend?"... what are the chances of getting "Oh!? That's a good idea! Let's do that!!" as an answer?  I'd say 98% No.  I left 2% for a miracle to happen.  If you were to be that 2%, you should just shut up and marry that person who says "yes", lol.

But seriously, if you were to meet with fellow sketchers, it is pretty natural that we start talking about our sketches, what pens you use and kind of papers/sketch book etc, you get to know people almost instantly and feel as if we were friends for a long time.  And that, happens even with friends from abroad!!  You don't speak English? nah, it doesn't matter cuz we speak the language of "Urban Sketching" lol right?!

So, the other day we had Jenn from Vancouver, Canada as a guest sketcher and had a little sketch outing in Okachimachi.

This corner reminded me of Tekkonkinkureeto.

I pushed myself to sketch this and the sloppiness says it all lol

The one on the very bottom, colored sketch is Jenn's !!

We went to this coffee place after sketching to warm ourselves up.

And, also, the next day, we met up again in Tennozu Isle and sketched at this very fancy cafe bakery place!!

The place had a really nice atmosphere but as we concentrated on our sketches, we all stop talking. I even forgot to sip my coffee... lol

clockwise from top left: Jenn, Naoko, Shin and Momoko

How do you like that?  Looks fun hey?  Yeah, it really IS fun!!

We were all excited to meet again that day and started to sketching together. But as we sketched, our gears went up and concentrated... we stopped talking lol  I think we don't need to talk, but share the sketchers bond in the air around us. And as a result, we create these great souvenirs for ourselves.  I thinks this is very special in of itself... You enjoy the moment fully and as you kinda wake up from that enjoyment, you have a memory sketched inside of your sketchbook.... Later on when you flip through them, you'll remember clearly what happened that day...  If you are reading this and haven't joined our outing event, I hope to see you someday, I am sure you'll love it too.

How is everyone doing?

Did you guys enjoy last month's Sketch Outing in Shimokitazawa?

Since the last one (Sumida Jazz Festival outing) was quite a success, and even the one before that (Azabu Jyu-ban) we had a blast with a couple of new faces at the post-sketch dinner thing that I was so looking forward to joining the event.

But, just a few days before the Shimokitazawa, I looked up my schedule book and found that I had a work on that Sunday, just like that!!  I was like WHATTTTT!!??

I thought it's my eyes getting old and can't focus so I took off my glasses and looked carefully but it said "Yeah dude, you've got to work!!"

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's just plain stupid the fact that I didn't notice this until a few days before the event, but when I found out about this I was at this fancy cafe eating my fancy lunch, struggling myself not to scream, holding my hands covering my mouth as if I was in some kind of a horror movie...

sob sob....no way... but sobbing won't change the work schedule so I gave up on that.  Instead, I called a few of my close friends and go out for a casual sketch outing myself.  To Kuramae / Okachimachi area.

Anyway, here are some of my sketches from that outing...

we strolled about, went to check out "Kakimori" the stationary store.

This is somewhere around Okachimachi.  Found this soba noodle storefront kinda attractive so I started sketching.

We only had an hour for these sketches and when I finished the Soba noodle place, I only had 15minutes left, so I quickly did a line drawing for this beat-up Chinese restaurant building and decided to color it at home.

Here's the colored version.

Having a whole gang of people at our Monthly Sketch Outing is really fun but sometimes, this kind of small circle of friends sketch outing is pretty nice too.  I want to thank my friends who showed up even it was such a short notice.  Thanks guys!

A foreign land called Kanazawa

The other day, I visited Kanazawa for work.

Having literally zero geographic sense, when I was asked to drive to Kanazawa, I said "sure!".  However, when I googled the route and it said it takes 6 hours and a bit, I was like Uh, oh...

So anyway, I woke up around 4:30am just like CEO of Apple and started driving!

Felt like driving for hours but the clock said it's still 7:30am and I was like Whattt?! Is Time distorted?!

Anyway...

The thing that struck me the most when I arrived in Kanazawa was its vibes.  I had visited Kanazawa about 10 years ago for work but at that time the place was so empty, it was like out of nowhere just as other non-major cities in Japan. But since the Hokuriku Shinkansen (Northbound bullet train) opened up in 2015, it boomed the visitors from all over Japan and abroad.  There were tourists everywhere.  The hotel I stayed in was packed with foreign visitors that I felt as if I came to some foreign country...  The energy of the place was totally different.

There were no time for sight seeing since I was there for work but the lounge at the hotel that I stayed in was pretty nice so I sketched there while drinking beers.

Drinking beer and sketching... what more can I ask?

The next day at breakfast.  One of the guys (foreign tourist) was using chopsticks pretty well.

The French lady sat next to my table.  The sound of French was nice to my ears.  I had no idea what they were talking about though.

So, that's about it.  It was a weekend business trip to Kanazawa but felt like visiting a foreign country.  I am kinda happy that I got to sketch for myself even I was there for work.  These sketches be my souvenirs in time for sure...

OhHara Fishing Port Sketching Experience!!

for Japanese version, click HERE.

I went to
OhHara Fishing Port in Chiba to sketch with friends from Yotsuya Dessin
over the weekend.  It was a sketch outing event that was originally
held at Setsu Mode Seminar, the school founded by legendary fashion
drawing artist, Setsu Nagasawa, where many of Yotsuya Dessin members had
graduated from.

Mr. Nagasawa was undoubtedly one of the
greatest figure in fashion figure drawings however, he also taught with
as much enthusiasm the importance of field sketching/landscape
painting.  Now, the member of Yotsuya Dessin has decided to revive that
fun and exciting event once again.  I participated as a member of Urban
Sketchers Japan to witness that.

One thing that I was
told about Setsu Sketch Outing was the size of the paper that they used,
that they painted BIG!  I mean, they said they usually use something
close to B2 size!  Considering my usual sketchbook as the size of an
iPad, the B2 is almost like a decent TV monitor!  You definitely need an
easel.

So I prepared myself with a
nice foldable drawing board and a tripod to go with them and tried
painting BIG!!  But, what do you know?!  I was totally knocked out!!  I
brought my size 18 brush (my biggest one) but it felt like so small for
the size of the canvas.  It was like battling against a huge goblin with
a tiny Xacto knife LOL!!  I am throwing my arms around but oh my god,
it was tough!!  Unusual size could make you go dizzy too, and I had
trouble fitting the scene in this big sized canvas!!

The bottom two are my usual sketchbook size, you can see how big the B2 size is!

Now, I was pretty much in shreds so I looked over
to my friends from Yotsuya Dessin.  And what do I see?!  They are battling their
battle with a huge ax and/or Japanese sword like brushes (the ones that
you use for painting a wall) and doing just fine!!  Wow! I should have
known better....

Mr. Yotsuya Dessin "Mr. K", He knows what he's doing!

After that, I used one size smaller
B3 size paper to draw, and this time it went OK.  But then I tried
sketching in my usual sketchbook and it felt so easy, like I know the
way around!!

This one is B3 size, still pretty big for my usual sketch size.

I usually use pen for the line drawing, but for this one I used PITT oil base pencil.

This one and the bottom three sketches are done on my usual sketchbook.

Local fishermen talking about a paint for their ships.  They had really strong accent.

Well, I
have learned so much from this trip.  Even though we have a monthly
sketch outing as USkJ group, we don't spend as much time hunting for
spots to sketch as we have a time limit.  But when you are on an
overnight trip like this, you could spend all day thinking, hunting for
the spot you want to sketch without worrying about time.  I also learned
how to deal with the size that you are not used to sketching, and how
to LOOK differently using different eye muscles to see... lol

 I
totally realized how I am NOT trained to see/look for the main subject
that I really want to sketch, and the ability to capture an interesting
composition to sketch.

When you find something you want to sketch, it seems the lines you draw energize/encourages you to make a good sketch?

And the last thing I realized was that even
if the scene looked photogenic, or sketch worthy in a general sense, if
you yourself can't find the scene so attractive, the sketch won't be as
good as you wish it'd to be.  The line eventually dies... The very
passion that drives you to sketch, is the essential part for a good
result.  I thought I knew this already, but experienced it very strongly
during this trip, and it was worth experiencing it again.

These are the ones that my lines somewhat bored me out and stopped drawing.

As you can see, it's just boring.  And you can feel how I was feeling too, can't you?

Now,
this trip was organized this year as a "prep" project to see how it
goes, so that it was announced only for the members of Yotsuya Dessin,
but maybe next year, I will be able to call for all the sketch lovers
out there to join the fun experience in OhHara Fishing Port!!
