Life in the park : Fixed point observation

I sketched this particular location in different times.

The first one was drawn in the most relaxed state when I look back.( It was in 2007 in Sagamihara Park in kanagawa.)

The second one was unfinished because when I was drawing this, the biggest earthquake hit Japan, so I stopped drawing it and went back home quickly.( 2011 March 11th)

The third one is in ten years, at the era of Covid 19. A newly playground equipment was erected.

繰り返し描いた窓外の景色 / I kept drawing same view again and again

3月よりUSK Japanのmonthly sketch meet-upはやらなくなり、外へ出て描きに行こうという気にもならず、文字通り缶詰生活をしてきた３ヶ月。お籠り中はスケッチには気乗りじゃなかったわけですが、それでもsketch meet-upの代わりに始めたweekly challengeだけはやるようにしていました。限られた対象物に対し、お題によって普段しない目の付け所を探ったり、画材や表現を変えることで、同じもの、景色を何度も描くことになったのですが、結果それはそれで意図しなかった収穫、気付きがあったと思います。それぞれのスケッチにはその時の現場の様子だけじゃなく、その時の自分の感情も記録されていくので、みるたびに思い起こされると思います。まだ付き合っていかなければいけないこの禍と向き合いながら、少し先の将来に振り返ってみるときに少しづつ違った景色が加わっているといいなと思います。でも今は肉食獣の気配に怯えながら水を飲むインパラ（と言ったらインパラに失礼でしょうか）みたいにリラックスできないで出かけるのは気乗りしないですが。

For more than three months of staying home period, I kept drawing same view repeatedly in variety of method, and approaches. Thanks to USK Japan's weekly challenges, I have forced myself to sketch at least once a week. This activity actually helped me to realize various things. Without those experimenting occasion, I wouldn't have done thus wouldn't have learned.

No.3 Kanagawa station in Tokaido

「東海道五十三次、広重と同じ風景が見たい」、今回は第三宿、神奈川です。横浜駅から東側に歩いて10分ほどのところに旧街道があり,広重は台町の茶屋を描いています。当時は急な坂道にいくつもの茶屋が連なっていて、そこからは海が見えたようで、今の横浜駅は海だったそうです。現在は田中屋という料亭が一件だけ残っているだけですが、今でも有名らしくこのスケッチをしている間にも七五三などのお祝いで会食する人たちが訪れていました。

"I sketch the 53 views in Tokaido, which Hiroshige drew”

This is the third station, Kanagawa-jyuku. There is an old road about 10 minutes from JR Yokohama station. About 180 years ago, Hiroshige Utagawa drew restaurants in Daimachi. There were some restaurants along the steep slope. You could see the sea in restaurants. Nowadays, there is only one restaurant named Tanakaya. It seems to be popular to local people. They celebrated something in there during sketching.

その後、みなとみらい地区に移動し、横浜、ぷかりさん橋を描きました。ここは客船ターミナルで、ヨコハマインターコンチネンタルホテルの裏にあります。なんどもこの辺りには遊びに来ていて、一度も入ったことはありませんが、外観は魅力的です。

After that, I went to Minatomirai district, I sketched the Pukari-Sanbashi which are the passenger terminal. There is behind the Intercontinental hotel. I visited many times but I have never entered there. However, this house has a wonderful exterior.

この日、新港埠頭がオープンして着岸第一船の「ダイヤモンドプリンセス」が着岸していました。新しい客船ターミナルの「横浜ハンマーヘッド」もオープンしていたようですが、あまりの人だったので、遠目に見ているだけにしました。

That day, The Shinko pier was opened and the first ship, Diamond Princess was docked. A new cruise terminal named Yokohama Hammerhead was opened too. It was so crowded, I only see there from a distance.

横浜山手のえの木ていを描いた一日

ここ最近のUSK Japanのスケッチ会では、自分は訳あって、大きめのフォーマットの紙に描くようにしています。大きいサイズに描くということは必然的に時間がかかるため、（いつもだったら午前と午後のそれぞれの会で違う場所（のも）を描くところ、）午前も午後も同じ場所に止まって描き続けます。時間がそれだけかかるということは、日差しの角度も変わるため、どこかの時間帯の陰影の様子を掴んで描き入れ、その秩序をもとに仕上げないと、刻々と変化する状況に引きずられてしまいます。そういう観念はあるものの、いざ実践すると結構難しかったりします。

今回描いたのはえの木てい。過去にも何度か描いた事があるこの建物と、木と、パラソルと、看板の織りなす可愛らしくレトロな風情はこの辺り山手エリアを描きに訪れる画家さんたちにも大人気です。度々描いていると、それだけで自分的に勝手に愛着を感じるし、この日通りすがりに絵を覗きこんでは声をかけてくれた人たちの中には写真を撮りにこの辺りを歩いていた人たちがいて、自分が描いている姿を写して、展示会に出してもいいかの許可を求めてきた人もいたり、ご近所に住んでいて、ここは散歩コースで、みんなが描いてるのをよくみるけど、よく描けてるわね、と褒めてくれる人や、絵を描くのが好きなお子さんが上手ですね、と寄ってきては、ありがとうございましたと、とても礼儀正しくお礼を言ってから去って行ったり、なんて絵描きにとって心地いい場所なんでしょうと、気分良く絵描きモードでいられたのでした。

みんなで集まっても静かに自分の時間に浸ることに専念する瞬間と、集合時間に集まって、みんながそれぞれに見つけたその日のお気に入りの場所のスケッチを見せ合って、ワイワイとその着眼点や作画スタイルに感心したりときめいたり、羨ましく思ったりの、on とoffがあるのがスケッチ会。今回もとても心地いい気温で、スケッチ日和で、新旧の仲間もたくさん参加され、いい感じでした。

今日は自分が撮った写真にアノテーションを入れてみました。

When the number of visitors from overseas increase...

The number of sketch meet ups also (naturally) increase.

We strive to find new and fun location to visit. (Without such occasion we may not know or visit certain places.)

Of course we sometimes visit same location again and again, such as Shinjuku gyoten, Ginza, Omotesando, Tokyo station etc..

Regardless the location to be old or new, we anyhow experience something new. If you are planning to join us to sketch together, please share your preferable locations with us so that we can broaden our choice of location, to sketch and to explore.
