Meet Your USkJ Friends: Grover

A new episode of Meet Your USkJ Friends has just arrived! This is a series of interviews with USkJ members. This time we are featuring Grover, a designer from Hong Kong who moved his business to Tokyo two years ago. Aside from his story of starting sketching, favorite sketchers, and sketch kit, he also shared the background of his personal project called Sketch My Tokyo. Hope you enjoy!

---------------------

1: When did you start sketching? How did you get involved in the USk community?

Top: Sketch when I study graphic design on 1994
Bottom: Sketches from sketch crawl event on 2007

I start sketching when I’m studying graphic design in Hong Kong about 20+ years ago. At that time I have friends who study interior design and they invite me to go for outdoor sketching and that’s how it started.

A few months ago I felt I’m losing passion in my job. So I start browsing my old sketch books and I re-discover my passion about sketching, especially outdoor sketching with friends. I found some outdoor sketches while I joined a sketch crawl event with online friends in Hong Kong on 2007. I really want to sketch with a group of people again so I start researching online and see if there’s anything similar in Tokyo. That’s how I found the Urban sketching Japan community and joined my first USKJ gathering in April.

2: What do you like to sketch (people, architecture, nature, etc.)?

Top: Hikawa Maru Left: 6.4 event Right: Strangers on train

I like sketching urban scene, architecture and mechanic parts. I especially love to sketch things that are meaningful and emotionally connected with me. When I draw I love to draw every tiny details of the subject. I learned a lot about the subject and how they work / built by drawing the details.

Recently I love sketching people, especially in trains. Finishing a quick sketch within a few minutes feels very challenging and rewarding.

3: Show us your favourite sketch done in Japan and tell us about it.

Top: Ikebukuro East Exit Bottom: Retro car and engine

1. Ikebukuro east exit: I love busy street scene so when I stop by Ikebukuro I decided to draw this view right outside the east exit. While I’m sketching I notice there are so many billboard ads so I end up draw them all in the sketch.

2. Vintage super car: I don’t like driving / cars but I like the mechanic details of the car engines.  I’m so excited when I knew there’s a Showa Retro exhibition with 3 Retro super cars exhibited. This is the first time I sketch super car and their engines and I love the result very much.

4: Name your favourite sketcher(s) if any.

I have many favourite sketchers that I have made a list of videos here:

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLr_Pfq45-uHAzE4s_BI1eJbT-4Jq7Ur4h

But there are 2 sketchers that I like most:

1. Felix Scheinberger: I really admire his wildness and freedom in his sketches and illustrations. I’ve watched almost every YouTube / interview videos about him.

Felix Scheinberger。

2. Kim Jung Gi: I admire his huge visual library inside his brain that he can draw anything out of his memories and without any reference. I especially love his on-location sketches in his early years of his career. Link: https://youtu.be/5c3wazcGYSY

Kim Jung Gi。

5: Show us your sketch kit (sketchbook, pen, watercolor, etc.)

I mainly use simple tools like fine liners and mechanic pencils. When sketching people in trains I use fude nib fountain pen or brush pen.

For sketchbooks I use Daler-Rowney hard cover 150gsm sketchbook. And a craft paper sketchbook for sketching people on train.

6: What has urban sketch brought to your life?

Sketch while travelling to Istanbul, Turkey on 2008

Urban sketching helps me record my own life in my own way. Instead of taking photos with smartphones, sketching with my pens and paper, observing with my eyes, spend time focusing on the moment, all these combined becomes a special meditation experience for me. Sketching and drawing keeps me on focus and points me to the right direction when I felt lost in life and work.

And in the past I used to made sketches when I travel abroad. I found these sketches very precious and valuable when I look and read them nowadays. I feel like I’m meeting my younger me and gained back a lot of lost memories!

7: You are working on your personal project, Sketch My Tokyo(*). What about Tokyo attracts you?

Sketch My Tokyo(*)

Sketch map at www.sketchmytokyo.com

For me, in the past, Tokyo is the number one sight-seeing choice for travelling. It’s a city of contrast where modern, traditional, futuristic, east and west elements all mixed together.

But my feelings towards Tokyo changed a little bit since I moved my business to Tokyo 2 years ago. It becomes a city where I work and live that everyday life becomes a routine.

I kind of lost the interest of exploring Tokyo. And I don’t like that. I want to keep my curiosity and my heart as a tourist, keep exploring and record interesting things in Tokyo with my sketches as much as I can. That’s why I start my personal project “Sketch my Tokyo” to remind myself to “keep my heart as a tourist” everyday.

*Writer's note: Sketch My Tokyo is Grover's art project to sketch every interesting spot along all 280+ metro and subway stations in Tokyo. You can find his sketches using the map on the website.

I find his story a little different from the others featured in this series. It’s a story about rediscovering. It was very interesting to learn how sketching has been helping him open his eyes to Tokyo again and reclaim back his lost passion. As he said in the interview, sketching lets us focus on the moment, gives us the chance to stop and observe, and help us find the context even in a mundane everyday routine. In the last interview (with Hai), I re-learned that urban sketching enables us to keep things that come and go every day frozen in our sketchbooks. But this interview reminded me of another important aspect of urban sketching – it gives us the power of storytelling.

Meet Your USkJ Friends: Hai

Finally, a new episode of Meet Your USkJ Friends! We started this series of interviews with USkJ members in 2020. Originally, the purpose was to get to know more about each other and stay connected even when we were physically apart because of the pandemic. Now, fortunately, the situation is more under control and we are slowly resuming in-person activities. But, as the group is becoming active again, we are getting new members and I thought it would be a good time to introduce them. So, here's an interview with one of new USkj friends, Hai. He's a skilled sketcher from Vietnam who studied architecture. Hope you enjoy!

---------------------

1: When did you start sketching? How did you get involved in the USk community?

Well I guess 13 years ago I started sketching when I was an architectural student, but it hadn’t been Urban Sketching yet.

By chance, around 7 years ago, I saw a group of enjoyable locals sitting on ground, on stools. They drew streets, buildings, people,… whatever in front of their eyes with a free style of drawing, that was totally different to my sketching style at that time. Their style was more casual and lively than my academically boring one. Ever since then, I’ve gradually switched to Urban Sketching style.

2: What do you like to sketch (people, architecture, nature, etc.)?

I like to sketch Architecture mainly, it’s likely to be an “occupational obsession” I guess lol. Before I preferred old buildings to the new ones, but now vice versa. I think I’d change my favorite again in a not-so-far future.

Tokyo, Nakagin Capsule Tower

1972 – 2022

Kurokawa Kisho

This is a sketch of Nakagin Capsule Tower.

I visited this building at its very last moment, a few days before its demolition. Watching and sketching with my bare eyes a legendary building which appeared in my university textbook 10 years ago brought to me a hard-to-say feeling, maybe the mix of nostalgia and amazement.

I was quite surprised that many visitors, young, middle-aged people, the elderly, came there to record, to watch or simply to have a moment with the building for the last time. Everyone coming quietly with regrets for one of Japanese Architecture’s symbols did touch me.

4: Name your favorite sketcher(s) if any.

He was Phong Khieu, a local sketcher I’ve mentioned above. He wasn’t well known but he was a friend of many sketchers in Vietnam and Asia. He sketched fast, captured subjects quickly and accurately. His linework was strong and determined, that was contrary to his humble attitude.

Phong Khieu

Above was one of Phong Khieu’s sketches in Hanoi.

5: Show us your sketch kit (sketchbook, pen, watercolor, etc.)

Here is my favorite sketching kit for now. A6 notebook (or B5 for more detailed sketches), Platinum Century #3776 fountain with M nib that I find very reliable through years, marker pen for thicker strokes and some color pencils.

I always try to make my kit as compact as possible, trying to utilize the simple tools and focus on experiencing the location.

6: What has urban sketch brought to your life?

This is such a big question indeed!

I personally think experience is most valuable, and thanks to Urban Sketching, now I could record it through my eyes directly on paper.

I have taken many photos, and most of them go amiss, I rarely see them again; but with sketches, they are different. Every time I look at a sketch again, atmosphere, surroundings, and even details could be recalled together. Also, it’s very helpful for my occupation in building up my personal architecture database as well.

7: You like Japanese modern architecture. Why does it attract you? Is there any particular building you would like to sketch next?

Yes, I like Japanese Modern Architecture, this is the reason why I’m here actually.

To say, Japan has a very special geographic location, pretty isolated to the continent and frequently suffering from natural disasters. Especially after WW II, with the disadvantage background, there were more and more challenges for Japan to overcome the difficulties. But they did well, even magically.

Many prominent Japanese architects rose in the post-war period also. They did not only copy what the West had done, but also exposed Japanese culture and spirit through architecture, not only for domestic needs but also for international recognition. Even some architectural movements initiated by Japanese architects were ahead of its time, and we still could see some features of theirs nowadays.

The specific context and characteristics above attract me.

St. Mary’s Cathedral designed by Tange Kenzo 丹下健三 and The National Museum of Western Art designed by Le Corbusier in Tokyo are 2 next buildings I would want to spend hours with.

Le Corbusier could be seen as the father of Modern Architectural philosophy, while Tange Kenzo – one of the founders of Japanese Modern Architecture, master of many noted architects in Japan. Tange Kenzo was influenced by Le Corbusier also.

Hope you enjoyed the interview. I personally find his sharing very interesting. Particularly I learned about Japanese Modern Architecture while translating the text since I’m not familiar with architecture at all. Some buildings such as Nakagin Capsule Tower are demolished as they age even though they have international recognition. So, we should keep them in record and memory while they exist. Through the interview, I also relearned urban sketching enables us to do that and capture “life” in a tangible way. This is the new episode of Meet Your USkJ Friends we published for the first time in a long time, but I’m planning to have another interview later. Thanks for reading. See you in the next post!

When did you start sketching? And how do you get involved in the USk/USkJ community?

I guess it was around 7years ago? my landscape design teacher advised me that sketching something every day is a good way to improve the drawing skill. I don't know everybody knows that but now I am working as a landscape designer, but my previous job was completely different.
Originally, I was working for a trading company, in Toranomon, Tokyo. At that time, Toranomon was full of buildings and not much greenery, and I thought it was not good for people working there, then I became interested in the job field to create green spaces and gardens. After that, while working in the company, I started to study landscape design. And that was my origin of the sketching history. I liked drawing when I was a child and wanted to be a cartoonist when I was around 15 years old, so it was a good opportunity to remember the fun part of the drawing.
I knew about the USk, not in Japan but Newzeland. After quitting the trading company, I moved to Christchurch, New Zealand to work as a gardener, and at that time I had belonged to a local sketching group that held the sketching event twice a month Saturday. Their style was quite similar to the USk(J), like sketching outside scenery or buildings, whatever they feel they want to on the site, but that was just a local group. Some of the members of that sketching group came from a different city of New Zealand and they had the experience of joining the New Zealand version of the USk, then I knew this existence from them.
Although I've never related to the USk there, after coming back to Japan, I missed the feeling of sketching together with people and found USkJ. I immediately sent a message and here I am.
It's not the story about sketching, but I'm currently involved in a project to build greenery in Toranomon, and I feel that what we think of can be realized unexpectedly.

what do you like to sketch particularly? ( people, architect, street crowds, food, etc)

I like to draw landscapes with people. I especially enjoy drawing lively places, because it makes the picture come alive. These days it's difficult to find time to draw, so I draw in places where I have nothing to do, such as on the train. I sometimes draw structures and architecture, but actually, I don't like to draw scenery where I have to repeat the same lines over and over again because it makes me tired. Also, I like to draw in a short time, and I always wish I could draw in a simpler way.

Inside the mountain cottage in Northan Japanese Alps during the time of blizard.

What's brought urban sketching in your life?

Although I like sketching, I don't do much sketching when I get busy because I prioritize other things. The only time I sketched these days were when I was on the train, and I was in the mountain stuck in a human traffic jam and I couldn't move. Sketching is like a meditation, I can be quiet mode wherever I am.
I think, for me, USkJ created an opportunity to draw again. After coming back to Japan, I didn't sketch for a while because I missed interacting with people. And then, I contacted USkJ, I participated in my first event at Togoshi Ginza(if it is correct), and I've been drawing ever since. Everybody's drawings are inspired me a lot, and I always feel I need to keep up with them.
I haven't been able to draw much after the pandemic since all the sketching events were canceled. I know there are some online, but now I need to meet people in person to motivate me to draw.

James Richards

Name your favorite / inspirational sketchers.

James Richards, I think. After reading his book "Freehand Drawing & Discovery", I decided to try outdoor sketching, and that's how I came to do my current sketching. When I started sketching, I just drew things that were close at hand, like cups, fruits, etc. But when I came across this book, I started to try urban sketching.

Are there anything you want to try as USkJ activity?

Well, I hope we have a sketching event again! I'm looking forward to getting back all together again.

Meet your USkJ friends : interview with Momoko Takada

Today I interview MomoKo-san, who is a young energetic member of our group, with full of new ideas. You probably have seen event announcements released by her in our Facebook group frequently, or her posts in USk Japan blog. She also work actively as a core-member to make our group fresh and mature. Now enjoy her stories!

Since when are you participating USk Japan, and on which platforms? (FB/IG, sketch meetups, blog contribution, etc.)

Although I'm an admin, I'm actually quite new to urban sketching. In the spring of 2018, I stumbled upon the hashtag, #urbansketchers, on Instagram. It sounded cool to me, so I googled it and found the USk community. At that time, I liked recording my day by drawing things I saw and experienced in daily life and where I traveled. I didn't have the skill or courage to draw on location, though. My drawings at the time were mostly done from photos. But I imagined it would be much fun if I could sketch on location and was strongly attracted to the idea of urban sketch, which is documenting what we see and experience by drawing it exactly at the moment and place.

So, I joined USkJ's FB group. Although I just looked at it in the beginning, soon I started urban sketching myself and attending sketch meetups (My first meetup was the one at Kyu-Furukawa Gardens in the middle of summer. I remember my brain and body were melting because it was insanely hot.). After a while, I got to help arrange a few sketch meetups. In the meantime, some USkJ members were planning to set up the organizing team ("core members"). I was invited to it for some reason and became one of the core members. It was at the end of 2018. I was a very beginner, but they didn't care about the lack of skill or experience, and treated me equally as a core member. This openess enbaled me to fit in with the group in no time. In USkJ, no matter whether you are professional or amateur, a newbie or experienced, you can enjoy sketching with all other sketchers shoulder by shoulder, and any style and approach are respected. This is what I love about the group.

What's your favorite subjet to draw?

I'm drawn to the concept of a place or space, rather than just buildings or landscapes. Originally I'm not really interested to draw one single subject but to observe the relation and interaction between different things and to capture the space (in other words, atmosphere, context, or even narrative) created by them. I particularly like places such as cafes and HUB (British-pub-styled bar chain, where we often had drink and draws) because there are different subjects to sketch, for example, people, interior, food, and drinks. By drawing a collection of them, you can see a story or "feels" experienced at the place spontaneously come through the page.

But recently I've been putting more focus on people and drawing them without including the background or surroundings. This is my new approach to documenting a place. I do this mainly on train rides. You might wonder how one can show the place only by drawing people. But if you sketch random people, they become a series and collectively start to tell a story of the time and place.

What has urban sketch brought to your life?

Urban sketch is an outlet for me to share what I see/hear/experience and express what I feel/think about it. Originally, writing was my major outlet. I liked (and still do) blogging and shared my experiences and ideas through writing. But, after I found urban sketch, I realized I can do it through sketching as well. Plus, in the USk community, not only a drawing itself but written information such as a caption is much valued. Many urban sketchers are good writers. So, urban sketching allows me to enjoy both drawing and writing and share my world through my two favorite activities.

What other activities would you like to do with USk Japan in the future?

Personally, I'm interested in translating information from the global USk and overseas chapters only available in English to make it more accessible to the Japanese sketching community (and vice versa). But now Google Translate is somewhat reliable, so I don't know if there's the need for translation.

For me, writing is important as well as drawing. So, I want to develop the writing aspect and idea of how written information can be combined with drawings effectively. I wonder if it would be interesting to have a presentation or something like that about the relationship between writing and drawing... What do you think?

Name your favorite sketcher.

I'm a fan of both drawing and writing by Elizabeth Alley from Memphis, a former President of USk. I love her blog her blogand try to follow her sketch journaling style, in which she records her days in a relaxed manner with her concise, but insightful writing. Her post on the global USk blog amazingly represents how urban sketching documents a time through a few of her daily sketches and the brief text.

What sketching materials/tools would you bring with you if you could travel with no need to worry about COVID-19? (Question from Casey-san)

This question is funny as Casey-san asked not where I'd like to go sketching but what I would bring lol. I think I'd bring my usual sketch kit, so I'm showing it.

Pens

(left to right)

Kuretake's Zig markers

Pelikan's Twist fountain pen

Sailor's Fude de Mannen (bent nib) fountain pen

Lamy Safari fountain pen

Pilot's Parallel Pen

Other than these, I also use regular ballpoint pens and fineliners. Currently I'm drawing very much with Fude de Mannen.

Watercolor

Winsor & Newton

Since I started sketching, I've been using this handy kit. I'm not good with colors (and I'm so ashamed of it), so I don't pay much attention to watercolor. Twelve colors are enough for me because it's too many choices if I have more.

Sketchbooks

(left to right, top to bottom)

Hahnemühle Watercolour Book in A5

Other casual sketchbooks

I always have two or three different types of sketchbooks—one high quality hard bound watercolor book and one or two more affordable casual book(s). I change my sketchbook depend on the situation and mood. My current watercolor book is from Hahnemühle. The paper is so nice that I can enjoy applying watercolor though I'm not really good with it as I said above. This sketchbook is pricey, but I'm in love with it. As for casual sketchbooks/notebooks, I have tried a few different books. Maybe Royal Talens' one is best for me—it is affordable, has plenty of pages, and somewhat handles watercolor.

By the way, where would you guys go sketching if you could travel to any place you like? I'd choose London.

Describe the ink colors from Kakimori (stationery shop chain based in Tokyo) that you have used and tell what ink you want to try. (Question from Casey-san)

I'm not particular about ink and probably Naoko-san should be able to give more helpful information about it... Anyway, I think I want to try Platinum's Classic Ink in a different color than Lavender Black, which I already have. The ink deepens its color and gets darker over time, and it's really nice how the color changes.

As for Kakimori's ink, I've never used their ready-made ink. At their ink specialty shop, you can make your original ink color by choosing three from their basic colors and mixing them at a ratio you like. There I've made two colors.

The first color is warm gray with a touch of brown tone. I filled it in a pen kit also from Kakimori to make my own color pen. I use it mainly for shadows.

The second one is slightly purplish brown. This is my signature color. I've been using it filled in Fude de Mannen since September, and I LOVE the combo. The loose lines and warm color make my drawings look relaxed. I use the combo especially when I sketch at a cafe. This brown color is suitable for Japanese wooden architecture and Western brick buildings as well as cafes.

Kakimori's ink is waterproof. Costume-made colors is made by mixing different colors, but discoloration doesn't happen—the colors are beautiful after years.

I can see that she has such a keen eye for every single aspect, and makeing choices gracefully just like how she treasures her favorit color inks.

Meet your USkJ friends : interview with Mariia Ermilova

When did you start sketching? And how do you get involved in USk/USkJ community?

Since I remember myself in childhood, I liked to draw. So, when I was in junior high school I asked my parents to let me go to art school. I passed the exam and started to attend afterschool lessons in the evenings. I’ve spent there 4 years, and all the time we constantly draw “nature morte” in the classroom. There were many students, preparing for the exam to Architecture Academy. I liked the summer practice the most. We used to go out to our old city (it is celebrating 800 years date in 2021) and draw plein air: watercolor, pencil drawings and sketches. We brought the lunch boxes with us and spend the whole day wandering in the tattered neighborhoods. Sometimes we made discoveries, like that someone is keeping chickens in the middle of the city. I remember, how happy we were, feeding the chickens with our sandwiches…

I guess since that time (2003-2007) I picked up the habit to draw outdoors. I started to draw plants and insects in my garden, do sketches in summer camps and expeditions. Then in 2008 I entered the Biological Faculty in State University of Nizhniy Novgorod, and totally immersed myself in drawing animals and plants, as it was part of the study.

After graduation, I came to Japan in 2015 to continue my study. That year I learned about USK. New country, many impressions - so I was drawing constantly again, and I started looking for someone doing the same thing. I found the USK community on internet, and then discovered local group, managed by Kumi. She kindly invited me for sketch outing and we get to know each other. That is how I joined in!

what do you like to sketch particularly? ( people, architect, street crowds, food, etc)

As a naturalist, I am particularly into drawing landscapes, plants, and animals that inhabit them.
I love to sketch nature in the city. For example, shrines, temples and my university campus. I believe that nature can show the culture and identity of a place as good as it does architecture. When talking about urban sketching and urban environment, I love the “old city”.

What's brought urban sketching in your life?

I think I’ve started sketching more regularly, and somehow consider it a visible part of my life. I mean, the community made me aware of many things! For example, of the mission to show the world one drawing at the time :) It’s about being connected. It gives me strength. Also, feel warm in any place around the world, because I know there are friends sketchers there! :D

Name your favorite/inspirational sketchers.

I like the reportage capture of Rita Sabler, raw energetic lines of Veronica Lawlor, super-long panoramas of Tia Boon Sim, and the unique touch of KK. I really like the ink style of Rolfschroeter based in Berlin. Almost none of them I met in person! I also personally love the USK Singapore, the whole chapter. They are an example to look up to, I think. USK Singapore published series of books about the various districts of the city, caring about it's heritage. USK Singapore is very cheerful chapter and mood-making at any event. I attended the regional (Asian) meetings - Asia Sketch Link events in Kuching (Malaysia) and Taichung (Taiwan) and met wonderful people there. I will definetely go on such gathering again!

With USK Singapore in 2018

Is there anything you want to try as USkJ activity?

Yes! I want to try urban sketching with a focus on urban nature. It could be interesting to make collaborations with gardens or botanical gardens, to make sci-pop nature observation activities.  Sketching is a multifunctional tool: to learn, to discover the world, to communicate your understanding, etc. I am looking into the possibilities to use sketching in academic research and action: ethnography, participatory planning, environmental education. So, with the USK Japan and USK board members, we organized workshops and discussions in 2018.

Regarding your first experience in organizing Sketch Workshops in Chiba University as well as Matsudo Iwase municipal hall in 2018, tell us the most difficult part ( rewarding, fun part as well ) in organizing such an event. And how do you get necessary cooperation particularly?

Photo from event in Iwase local community and Chiba University, Matsudo, February 2018

First of all, I asked my supervisor professor Isami Kinoshita for cooperation, his area of interest mainly circled around community design and children participation, includes socially engaged, participatory art. By the way, he also have a habit of drawing sketches in little album while traveling. So, he agreed to support the event and be a moderator on our discussion session. He also joined the sketch walks! As a student of Graduate School of Horticulture, Chiba University, I was able to book auditoriums for the meetings and event.
The next step was to get the cooperation in the community where I am living - it is Iwase Neighborhood Association in Matsudo. I asked local leaders if I can make an event on their territory. Me and my partner working as community coordinators in Iwase, so we get a great support. Some members of community even participated in sketch walk.
It was a first big sketching event we organized, so It was worrisome. But I learned from mistakes and now want to do things better!
This event gave me food for a thought. I am reflecting on possibility to make sketching an activity for everyone, which people can easily join and socialize, connect with others and environment around them.

Recently I focused on drawing Nature Journals - sketching while observing nature. I want to learn the names of Japanese plants and animals, so it is helping me to get aquainted with the environment where I live. I plan to continue on involving sketch as a tool in academic research and education.
