Wish you were here!! Sketching at Sumi-Jazz Festival '19 (August 18th)

みなさんもう既に久美サンや桃子サンの記事を
読んだとは思いますが、遅ればせながら僕のレポートです。しかしあの楽しかった「すみジャズ」が、もう２週間も前の出来事になるなんて正直信じられませ
ん。 ホントに暑かったけど、最高に楽しかったあの時間！！そんな時間を、スケッチを愛する仲間たちと過ごせたなんて、本当に快感でしかなかったね。

I'm sure you have read Kumi and Momoko's report already but... here's my report on Sumida Street Jazz Festival sketch outing the other day.  

It's just crazy how FUN time flies so fast!!  Can't believe it was almost 2 weeks ago that we had this blast time at Sumida Street Jazz Festival!  It was really HOT but it was extremely FUN! And having such time with all the sketch loving friends was almost ecstatic LOL.

この日最初のスケッチにして、新調したスケッチブックの記念すべき1ページ目がこれ。様子を見つつ、何となく固くなっているのが線から伝わるね（笑）



The very first sketch of the day was this one.  It also happened to be the very first page of my new sketch book so I was trying not to screw it up lol...  You could see a bit of hesitation in my lines...

 野外ステージのパフォーマンス。心地よいビートに自然と体が反応するんだよね。全身で音の振動を感じつつペンが走る！

Live performance and their groove made my body sync with the music.  I could feel my whole body having fun!!

ライブばかりじゃなく、音響さんのPAブースも面白いことになってました。機材に囲まれ、大きな扇風機は人ではなく機械を冷やしてた（笑）

Not only the Jazz performance but the sound engineer (PA) booth was also very fun to sketch.

そして会場内を練り歩き演奏するバンド！！こんなの絶対面白いでしょ！？もういても立ってもいられない感じ、わかる？描かねば！！と一番最初にチューバの円から描き始めたのは記憶にあるんだけど、その後はもうトランス状態なのかな？憶えてないよね（笑）

A lightning struck me when I saw these guy marching around the park!  I had to draw them!! NOW!!  I totally remember I started from drawing the circle of the Tuba, but after that I might have been in trance state? I can't remember...LOL

二度目に彼らに遭遇した時は追っかけて描いたもんね。まるで自分も彼らの一員みたいな感じで。ずっと動いてるから大変なんだけど、それを自分で補完しながら、自分の中から湧き出るグルーヴ感で描くのがまた楽しい。

As they marched around I followed them along holding my pen and sketchbook in hand, I felt as if I am a part of their performance.  As they were constantly moving, I had to somehow make sense of their movement but that's the part I love the most!!

お昼ごはんの後のセッションでは、ラージサイズのビールを買ったは良いが飲み終わるまでに疲れちゃって、あまりスケッチしなかった。ま、午前中に描きまくった満足感もあって、午後はアイスラテを探す旅をしながら人を描いたり変な鳩の絵を描いたり。

After the lunch break, I got tired from drinking a large size beer so I didn't sketch much.  Drew a lot in the morning session so I was kinda relaxed, walked around looking for an ice latte and sketched people a bit, did a crappy pigeon drawing and whatnot...

 さすがに自分が景色を描くタイプじゃないな、と分る一枚がこちら。普通の人ならスカイツリーを収める構図で描くでしょ？普通じゃない人が描くとこんな感じ。。。これはパステルを使って、少しモンワリさせてみた。何となく当日の湿気を含んだ暑さが伝わる感じじゃないですか？

And here's the view of the park.  As I am not really a scenery sketching person, I cropped the Sky Tree as usual... I used oil pastel to create texture and that gave this sketch a kind of muggy atmosphereic effect, don't you think?

So this is my report about Sumi-Jazz Festival... The great thing about having an event like this is that participants (seem to) enjoy it as much as I hoped they would and they actually show up at the next outing as well.  If you haven't participated before, we won't bite so you should come! LOL It would be fun!!  

という感じで、楽しかったすみジャズのレポートです。こういう企画をして一番嬉しいのは、参加してくれるみなさんが自分と同じくらい楽しんでくれるのを見ることと、その後のスケッチ会にも再び参加してくれることです。まだ参加したことのない方も、怖くないのでいつか遊びにきて下さい。楽しいと思うよ。

夏だ！フェスだ！スケッチだ！/ USkJ Meet-up Summer Edition at Sumida Street Jazz Festival

皆さんこんにちは！まだまだ蒸し暑さが続くこの頃ですが、いかがお過ごしでしょうか？普段よりもやや高めのテンションで始めております8月の月例スケッチ会レポート。今回はちょっぴり特別編ということで、今年で開催10年目を迎えたすみだストリートジャズに赴き、錦糸町エリアのそこここに現れる演奏ステージ、バンド、オーディエンスなどなどをレポタージュスケッチしてきました。

This month’s meet-up was a special summer edition and we went sketching at Sumida Street Jazz Festival, which marked their 10th anniversary this year. During the fest, stages popped up here and there throughout the Kinshicho area and bands filled it with music. We documented that by drawing bands, audience, etc.





すみジャズ参加は初めてでしたが、もともとライブや音楽フェスの活気が好きなので、今回とても楽しみで、ノリノリで行ってきました。

It was my first time to go to Sumi-Jazz. But I originally like music concerts and festivals (and vibes they create!), so I was very excited for this outing.

メイン会場の錦糸公園には演奏ステージのほか屋台や協賛企業ブースなどがあり、飲んだり食べたりしながらみんなでワイワイ楽しめます。

The main stages were set up at Kinshi Park, where also food stalls and sponsors’ booths popped up so you could enjoy eating, drinking, and other activities, while listening to music.

街の至るところで演奏が行われていて、錦糸町駅前もこんなかんじで大賑わい。

Literally bands played all around the area. There was a crowd surrounding the stage just in front of Kinshicho Station.

しかし意気込んで来たはいいものの、暑くて動きまわる気になれない！錦糸公園の木陰に座り込んでステージを囲む人たちをじっくり描きました。

I was full of energy to sketch, but once exposed to that heat and humidity, I couldn’t walk around. So, I sat down in a shade at Kinshi Park and took time for this drawing.

どんどん人が集まってきて描いても描いても終わらーん！となったやつ。

Audience kept getting bigger around the stage while I was drawing. I think I could’ve added people endlessly.

そんなかんじで午前のスローダウン。心なしかみんなのスケッチがいつもより躍っている気がする！

Throw down from the morning sketch. Seems our sketches are dancing along with music, doesn’t it?

各自お昼休憩をとり、午後のスケッチ開始。せっかくなので奏者や楽器を描こうと場所を探したのですが、観客に混じって立って描くの難しい！ていうか座りたい！と思って、結局また錦糸公園に戻り、座り込んでザクザクとボールペンスケッチ。

After lunch break, we started the afternoon session. I first tried to sketch bands and instruments, but it was so hard to draw standing amid audience (or I just didn’t want to stand under the sun) that I soon went back sitting on a hedge at Kinshi Park. Then I did this quick ballpoint drawing.

ボールペンだけでボリュームを出したい。出せない。

I need to learn to give volume and texture only with ballpoint.



午後のスローダウン。遅れて参加された方のスケッチも加わり、さらにバラエティ豊かに。

Throw down from the afternoon sketch. Now we had sketches by people joining late, which made our results even more rich in variety than in the morning.

今回のベストショット（勝手に選出）はゆきなさんの撮ってくれたこの一枚。皆さんのスケッチを一挙に拝見したときの感動の瑞々しさがわたしは大好きです。

The best photo from this meet-up is one by Yukina-chan. I think the warm sunlight represents the fresh surprise and wonder that we always have when we show sketches to each other at a time.

解散後、何名か残ってもう少しスケッチ。錦糸公園からはスカイツリーが見えるので、せっかくだから描いてみました。隣のビル、明らかに実際より階数が多く、150階立てくらいになる模様。

Some of us stayed to sketch a bit more. You can see Sky Tree from Kinshi Park, so I added it in the background. I drew too many windows on the next building. It would be like 150-story high :p

最後はだらだらと打ち上げ。疲れが一気に出ましたね。。。久しぶりにパラレルペンでDrink＆Drawをしました。このペンで描くと勢いが出るのでやはり好きです。

We ended up doing a drink and draw at an izakaya as usual though we all were super tired. I did a parallel pen sketch and tried to capture all the people I could see. I love drawing with the pen because lines go spontaneous and free.

ということで、とにかく暑さが心配な回でしたが、たくさんの方にお越しいただき、皆さん疲れはあったと思いますが、どなたも大きく体調を崩されずに終えることができ、運営サイドとしては安心しています（今回私は何もしていませんが笑）。改めて、ご参加くださった皆さん、今回の企画・運営を担当してくださったシンさん、いつもみんなの写真や、集合・スローダウン写真を撮影してくださる久美さん、なおこさん、鳥海さんなどなど、本当にありがとうございました。

To those who joined the sketching, thank you for being super creative despite that hot weather. As one of the organizers, I’m just relieved that no one got sick though I know everyone pretty tired. I also appreciate Shin-san, who arranged everything for this event, and Kumi-san, Naoko-san, and Casey-san, who always take photos of us and throw downs.



個人的に、今年1月から定例会を開いてきて、今回この真夏の暑さの中、すみジャズといういつもと異なるシチュエーションでスケッチ会を敢行するというところで、8月月例会を一つの区切りと考えていました。その節目の回を無事終えることができて、実はちょっと気が抜けています。が、9月についてももうアイディアは出し始めていますし、その後も少し企画があります。皆さんはこれまでの月例会いかがだったでしょうか？これまで行って楽しかった場所、行ってみたい場所、その他何でも感想やご意見ありましたら、この投稿シェアしているFacebookポストのコメント欄にいろいろ書き込んでください（このブログ自体のコメント欄が機能していないので。すみません）。皆さんの考えを読むのを楽しみにしています:)

Personally, this month’s meet-up was special because it was in a different situation than usual –– sketching at a music festival under super hot summer weather. But we managed to do it without any big trouble. So, I’m feeling grateful, and actually, a little empty as well. Yet we have already started discussing the location for next month and we also have an idea for later this year. How do you like the monthly meet-ups so far? I have shared this post on Facebook. Improvisation with Jazz

Urban Sketchers Japan グループのスケッチ会が隅田ストリートジャズフェスティバルの会場になった錦糸町でありました。



面白そうなシーンがいっぱいあり、あれこれ描いてみたいと思いつつ、思うような表現に至らずじまいで、それでも手探りで持っていった道具をあれこれ試しながら鉛筆画にしたり、水彩でぼんやり描いた後にペン入れしてみたりともがいてみましたが、自分的にはやや不完全燃焼気味な結果。しかし参加された皆さんの作品からはどれも面白い視点、表現を見ることができとても楽しめました。ああ、こんなさりげない表現いいな、とか、こんな色づかいがかっこいいなとか、そういう発見に今回もたくさん出会えたという意味ではとても満足な、音楽も楽しめた会でした。



When you sketch, you might have experienced that you aimed certain result but failed to meet up with your own expectation while you enjoy so much seeing other sketch pals' unique and cool results. It happens and that is also one fun and learning occasion by sketching together, and sharing.

こんにちは！記録的な日照不足の梅雨が明けたと思ったら、連日のこの猛暑!！しかし！へたばるヒマもなく８月の定例スケッチ会がやってきますよ！！８月の定例スケッチ会は、



すみだストリートジャズフェスティバルにて、レポタージュ・スケッチをしましょう！！



熱心な読者なら憶えているかもしれません、去年の僕の記事を！？

あの楽しさをみなさんと分かち合うべく、今年はみんなで「すみジャズ」を描きましょう！！



以下、当日の予定です：

（＊注意書きもあるので最後まで読んで下さい）



日時：8月18日（日曜日）11時〜16時半頃

待ち合わせ場所： 錦糸町駅南口駅前広場　(https://goo.gl/maps/W31ek8vqm3j63mcb7)

駅前広場でもライブがあると思いますが、この周辺で仲間や

USk Japanのバナーを探して下さい。



当日の流れ：

11時にJR錦糸町駅南口広場 集合

11時〜13時、 午前の部スケッチ

13時、集合場所にて午前のスケッチThrowdown （お披露目会）＆写真撮影

13時〜14時頃、各自お昼、若しくはスケッチ続行



14時半頃、集合場所に再集合ののち、午後の部スケッチ開始

16時、集合場所に再集合、午後のスケッチThrowdown（お披露目会）＆写真撮影

16時半〜17時、解散（その後、打ち上げ的に飲みに行きたい方は、各自で）



＊当日はメイン会場（錦糸公園）を中心に、街の至る所で演奏があります。開場近くで配られるパンフレットや、事前にホームページなどで、すみジャズについても予習してみて下さい。



＊諸注意

過去には突然のゲリラ豪雨に見舞われたこともあるそうです。当日の天候に関しては予想がつきませんので、各自十分な準備＆心構えをよろしくお願い致します。会場周辺は天気がよければ日陰なども少なくなりますので、飲み物を始め、帽子や日傘、扇子や携帯扇風機などの用意、また携帯イスなどもあると便利かもしれません。必要と思われる範囲でご用意ください。



メイン会場内では、お祭りのように屋台が出店していて、小腹が空いたり喉が渇いたりすれば比較的簡単に飲んだり食べたりできるとは思います。また、暑さにたまりかねたら、開場周辺のデパート等、冷房の効いた施設に避難することもおすすめします。各自無理をせず、楽しいスケッチが出来ればと思っております。ご協力よろしくお願い致します。





Hello everyone who loves Urban Sketching!!  Did you guys have fun sketching around Azabu Jyuban/Roppongi area in July's sketch outing?  For August, we are going to sketch at Sumida Street Jazz Festival!!



If you are an avid reader of this blog, you may remember my last year's entry?!  I really wanted to share the fun and exciting sketching experience with you guys, I am making this happen!!  Let's do reportage sketches at Sumi-Jazz!!



Now, here's the itenerary:

Date: Sunday, August 18th, 2019 11:00〜16:30

Somewhere around here?  There may be Jazz session going on

in this circle, but look around for familiar faces or USk Japan banner?



11:00  be at the meeting spot



11:00〜13:00 morning sketch session



13:00 be back at the meeting spot, have a Throwdown and take a group photo.



13:00〜14:00 lunch time or maybe keep sketching



14:30ish be back at the meeting spot and start the afternoon session



16:00 be back at the meeting spot and have a Throwdown and take a group photo again.



16:30〜17:00 end of the sketch outing (if you want to have a post sketching drink and draw/meal, please have a good time)



*The main stage is located in Kinshi Park but there will be many live performance happening throughout the area.  You may want to check their homepage for more details.



＊Precaution

Around this time of the year, the weather gets pretty nasty and unpredictable.  A couple of years ago they had a sudden squall and had to stop the show for a while and whatnot. The heat of course will be the most worrisome element for this outing so please be flexible and prepared.  You may want to bring not only something to drink but also an umbrella/hat with a wide brim, fan (old school or electric), portable chair  etc...



There'll be food  stalls around the main stage area at Kinshi Park, so you may have an easy access for something to drink/eat.  And if the heat gets unbearable, don't hesitate to evacuate to the nearest shopping complex where is all air conditioned.  Our main concern is to have everyone enjoy the outing!!  Hope you fee the same!!  Thank you for your cooperation!!
