台風の季節ということもあり、お天気が心配された9月のスケッチ会。直前まで雨予報が出ていましたが、蓋を開けてみたら、あらびっくり、いつも以上によく晴れ、暑い夏の一日が戻ってきました。
Since we have a lot of rain and even typhoons around this time of year, we were worried about the weather on the day of our September meet-up. The forecast said it was going to rain the previous day. But we were blessed with good weather again. It was sunny and hot, and even felt like summer was back.

お天気に恵まれたおかげか参加者も予想より多く、もう人数を数えるのはやめてしまいましたが、合計25人くらいにはなっていたと思います。
Under the blue sky, we were joined by much more sketchers than expected. I don't know the exact number, but around 25 in total?

さて、今回のスケッチエリアは下北沢。インディーの古着屋、レコード屋、劇場、カフェ、バーなどが並ぶ、言わずと知れた東京のサブカル／アンダーグラウンドカルチャーの中心地です。近年は再開発で様変わりしているようですが、それでも他の街にはない独特の雰囲気がまだ感じられます。
This time we visited Shimokitazawa, which is home to Tokyo's subculture and underground culture. The small lanes are lined with independent vintage clothing shops, record shops, theaters, cafes, bars, etc. Though the area has been changing in recent years because of redevelopment, you still feel the unique boho atmosphere there.
個人的に、下北は以前から歩き回って古着屋巡りなどしてみたいエリアだったのですが、あまり機会がなく、それならスケッチ会で行って、ついでに古着を見て、レコード漁りもカフェ梯子もしたらいいじゃん！という安直な考えで、今回この街をロケーションとして提案しました。それから本記事のタイトルに拝借したこのTime Outの下北ガイドを読んで、行きたいお店をピックアップして、さあ下北探索するぞ！……と意気込んだはいいものの、歩き始めて気づく、一日に全部は到底無理だということに。
I'd always wanted to explore Shimokitazawa, so I proposed it for the location of this sketching and decided to do all the Shimokita things--thrift shopping, vinyl record digging, cafe hopping. Then I checked out this guide to Shimokita by Time Out, from which I borrowed the title of this post, picked up places where I wanted to go, and started the day in Shimokita, really excited. But soon I realized it's impossible to do all in a day.

ふらふらと通りを彷徨い、途中で早くもいいスポットを見つけてがしがし描いている仲間に出くわしつつ、どうしよう何しようと思案するうち、最終的にこの角のお店の前で落ち着きました。
I wandered around without knowing what to do first and struggled to find a spot. Other sketchers had already settled in a good place and were working on their sketches... But finally I set a focus on this building on a street corner.
ミックスメディアというほどではないですが、異なるペンを使って、水彩の乗せ方も前景と背景で変えたりして、賑やかさを表現したつもり。。。
I did some mixed media experiment on this drawing, trying to create different effects with different pens.
本当はもう少し描きたかったのですが、とりかかりが遅かったので時間切れ。集合場所に戻って、午前のスローダウンです。
Though I wanted to draw more, I ran out of time and went back to the meeting place. Here is the morning throw down.

Everyone did a great job on picking up and capturing a scene.
午前中は下北沢駅の南側を歩いたので、午後は北側に出て、古着を見に行きました。そこで時間を使いすぎてしまい、疲れも出てきたので、コーヒーショップで休憩しながら店内をスケッチ。
Because I walked around the south side of Shimokitazawa in the morning, I went to see the north side and check out some vintage clothing shops in the afternoon. I spent too much time thrift shopping and got a bit tired, so I chilled out at a coffee place, drinking iced latte and sketching inside.
着色は家で。特に冒険のない、いつも通りのカフェスケッチになってしまいましたが、仕上がりは気に入りました。予想外に蒸し暑い日になったこともあり、午後は同様にカフェでお茶しながらという方も多かったみたい。
Added colors back home. This kind of cafe sketch is my comfort zone (in our monthly meet-ups, I actually want to try something new or bigger and push my boundaries), but I'm happy with the result. Well balanced.
Since the day was unexpectedly hot and humid, other sketchers also took rest at cafes.

午後のスローダウン。途中参加の方のスケッチも加わり、さらに賑やかに。
Here's the afternoon throw down. We were joined by sketchers coming late and they added more variety.
下北沢はこじんまりとしたエリアですが、いろいろな見どころ・楽しみ方があり、皆さん思い思いの下北の一日を楽しまれたようで、このロケーションを提案したわたしとしては嬉しい限りです。
Though Shimokitazawa is not a big area, there are different things to see and do. So, everyone enjoyed their own "one day in Shimokita".
街歩きの達人、鳥海さんにとっては今回が初めての下北だったそうで、すでにいろいろとおもしろい景色を発見され、今後さらに開拓したい街になった模様。
For instance, it was the first time for Casey-san, the master of Tokyo exploring, to visit Shimokita. Of course he found a bunch of interesting views. As the person who suggested the location, I'm happy he liked the area.
20数年ぶりに下北を訪れたという白川さんは、昔通っていらした劇場スズナリをスケッチ。思い出を振り返りながら描くの、最高ですね。
Shirakawa-san came to Shimokita for the first time in 20 some years and drew the theater Suzunari, which he would visit when he was younger. It's great to sketch while recalling memories.
いつも多作の久美さんは、今回はこちらの大判のパステル画一本に絞り、終日かけて描き込まれていました。かっこいい。
Super prolific Kumi-san, though, focused on this large-format pastel painting this time. She spent the day detailing on it. Amazing!

最近は印象的な水彩づかいで美しく風景を切り取っていたLaviniaさんは、スタイルを大きく変えたペンスケッチを。でもペンで描くほうが本当は慣れているのだそう。
Lavinia, who has been working with watercolor recently, changed her style drastically and did this cool pen sketch. But she told actually she is more used to drawing with pen.
そのほか全員の「1デイ in 下北」をシェアしたい勢いなのですが、長くなってしまうので、簡単に何名かのスケッチのみご紹介します。

とりあえず疲れたしお腹がすいたよねということで、残った何名かで居酒屋に行き、夕飯をとりました。花岡さんのDrink & Drawはいつも楽しい。
Some of us went for dinner at an izakaya because we were tired and hungry. Hanaoka-san's drink & draw sketches are always fun.
最後はコーヒーを飲んで、締め。イベント案内の投稿に掲載したシンさんのスケッチを見てから気になっていた、穴倉のようなクラシカルな喫茶店、トロワシャンブルへ行きました。美味しいチーズケーキとコーヒーをいただきつつ、みんなでスケッチ。角度が難しかったけど、その場にいた全員を描き込むことができて嬉しい。
Then we checked out this cool cafe like a den, called Trois Chambres. I was interested in the place since I saw Shin-san's sketch posted in the announcement of the meet-up. Having good coffee and cheese cake, we all sketched. I drew from a difficult angle, but I'm proud I drew all the people there.
そんなかんじで、わたしの下北の一日と一夜はこれにておしまいです。なんだかんだ古着も見られ、気になるカフェも行き、スケッチもたくさんできて、心残りがあるとすればレコード漁りができなかったことくらいでしょうか。見どころの多い下北沢。今回参加されなかった方も、ぜひスケッチしに行ってみてください。なんならご一緒しましょう。最後までお読みくださり、ありがとうございました。最近たまにブログ更新を楽しみにしていると教えてくれる方がいますが、とても励みになります。この場をお借りして全力のハグ（お礼）を。それではまた来月にお会いしましょう！
So that's it, our day and night in Shimokitazawa. Though I first thought I couldn't check out all the things I wanted to, I did thrift shopping and had coffee at a cafe I was interested in as well as sketching--the only thing left undone is record digging. Shimokitazawa has a lot to see. I'd recommend to go sketching in the area if you didn't join this meet-up. You can expect company of some of us. Thank you for reading till the end.
