Stationary TAG

My favourite stationary shop in Kyoto is TAG on Karasuma Street, since I bought my first portable watercolour set there almost ten years ago.  My ever increasing collection of fountain pens was mainly purchased there as well.  So it was time for a homage, drawn with my latest acquisition, the Pilot Prera fountain pen.

  I was installed in the café on the other side of the road, Takagi, wich apparently is a favourite of high quality coffee enthusiasts.

　京都での一番好きな文房具屋さんは、10年前ぐらいに初めての水彩絵の具の携帯セットをそこで買った時から、烏丸通りの文具店TAG本店です。持っている万年筆のコレクションもほとんどあそこで買ったのです。最近購入のプレラを使ってお店を写生しました。

　コーヒーにこだわりがある人に好まれているような、TAGの向こう側にある高木珈琲店で座って気楽に描きました。

Coloured Pencils Are Not (Just) for Children - 色鉛筆は子供のもの（だけ）ではない

娘の名作の上に私のスケッチ。

  Until now I have always used watercolour to add colour to my sketches.  But recently, I tried my three years old daughter's coloured pencils on a quick sketch.  I often helped her with her colouring so I knew how fun coloured pencils can be, but I had never considered using them in my own sketches.  However, I realised that the rough texture of a summarily applied pencil works well with my sketchy linework.

　現在まではスケッチを彩色する場合はいつも水彩絵の具を使ってきましたが、最近、3歳の娘の色鉛筆を借りてちょっとのスケッチで試してみました。彼女の塗り絵によく協力しているので、色鉛筆が楽しいことは分かっていましたが、自らのスケッチに使おうと思ったことはありませんでした。しかし、大まかに塗った色鉛筆のテキスチャーが私の落書きのような下書きに良く似合うと気づきました。



　







  So, I bought myself my own set of coloured pencils and gave them a try, sketching simple subjects in a café.  I had so much fun that it made me want to complete an urban sketch I had abandoned unfinished some time ago.

　ゆえに、色鉛筆の新しいセットを買って、カフェでの単純なモチーフを描いてみました。あまりに楽しかったですから、少し前に諦めた未完成のアーバンスケッチを完成しようと思いました。







  I had only sketched the outline and part of the details of this clock in front of the Kyoto branch of Nomura Securities Co.  So I happily completed the drawing, colouring in the details of the clock on the right side, then replicating them directly in pencil on the left side.  I let the hands show different times as a nod to the fact that I did the drawing in two sittings, and with a gap of over a month between them too.

  Every hour, an animated model of the naginata-hoko float (the most famous float of the Gion festival) comes out the bottom of the clock.  Sketching it was a real challenge since, on top of only appearing for a total of three minutes, it revolves back and forth.  I did what I could...

  Since the body of the clock has a reflective surface, I seized the opportunity to try the silver coloured pencil that came with the set.  Unfortunately, the texture of the watercolour paper makes it look like a dull grey; it needs a smoother surface to shine.

　野村證券京都支店の前にある時計のアウトラインと右側の細部しかできませんでした。まず右側の下書きの上に彩色してから、それを手本にして左側に色鉛筆で直接にコピーしました。

　毎時時計の下から祇園祭の長刀鉾のからくりが出ます。鉾を写生するのは非常に難しかったです。なぜなら3分しか現れない上に、回転もしますよ！何とかしてみました……

　





  Overall, I had a very fun time sketching with coloured pencils and I will certainly continue to experiment with them.  Their main appeal lies in that, unlike watercolour, it is a dry medium.  It means that you don't need to carry water with you which simplifies your setup and allows for fast colour notation.  You can also bring them with you when sketching indoor, in museums or temples for example.  They work with cheap, thin paper, even printer paper.  For me, it helped me simplify the colouring process as well.  There was no hesitation when choosing a colour, no mixing, no time wasted.  Even when the 'right' colour wasn't available, there was always a 'close enough' colour.  Also, it is a surprisingly compact gear, even with about forty different pencils.

　まとめとして、色鉛筆でスケッチしてとても楽しかったです。これからもまた使ってみます。色鉛筆の主なアピールは、水彩絵の具と違ってドライの媒体のことでしょう。ですから、水を持って行くことがなくてより簡単な設定だし、早く色をメモすることができるわけです。また、美術館やお寺などの屋内でも持って行けます。プリンター用の紙のような安くて、薄い紙でも使えることもあります。また、私には彩色のプロセスを単純化することにも役立ちました。色の選択に迷いもなく、混色も要らなくて、時間を無駄することがありませんでした。「正しい」色はなくても、十分に忠実な色はいつもありました。最後に、色鉛筆を約40本も持って行きましたが、あまり空間がとらない意外にコンパクトなギアです。

Three Simple Sketches - 3つの単純なスケッチ

I used to draw anything in front of me with assurance and abandon, in a simple style.  But increasing self-expectations -of sketching in colour, using good paper, or making a professional-looking picture- have driven me in a corner where I don't dare to pick up my sketchbook anymore.  "Will it be good enough to show to everyone?" "Does it qualify as an 'urban sketch'?" "Is it finished?"

　前は目の前にある何でも気楽に描いていました。しかし、最近、自分の期待のせいでスケッチブックを取り出せないほどの緊張を感じています。

  So, I reduced my gear to a cheap sketchbook, an extra-fine fountain pen and a brush-pen.  They can all fit in the inner pocket of my jacket.  And so, whenever I found myself having a few minutes free, I just pulled my sketchbook out and made a simple doodle-like sketch. No pressure!

　ゆえに、写生道具を減らして、安いスケッチブックと極細万年筆と筆ペンのみにしました。そのすべてはジャケットの裏ポケットに入れます。それでは、自由な数分があると、スケッチブックを取り出して、落書きのような単純なスケッチをしました。プレッシャーなし！

   I sketched the skyline from the 5th floor at my job during my lunch break.

　休憩時間で職場の5階の窓から見える風景をスケッチしました。

   





  Here is the big tanuki beckoning passersby at the entrance of the Nishio Yatsuhashi main shop.  I sketched it after work, standing practically in the dark.  I filled in the black parts after I got home.

　これは西尾八ツ橋の本店の前で客を招く巨大な狸さん。仕事が終わって帰る時、暗闇で描きました。ベタ塗は帰ってからしました。







  The game arcade 'a-cho' in the Teramachi commercial district.  There was a big tournament of retro fighting games going on and everybody was so concentrated that they didn't even notice me standing there.

　寺町商店街にある「a-cho」というゲームセンター。レトロ格闘ゲームの大会が開かれました。みんなはプレイに集中していたため、真ん中に立って描いていた私を気付かなかったのです。
